The Darkmod

In The Dark Mod, you play a master thief living in a dark, sprawling city. A blend of gothic architecture and steampunk technology, the city contains great, belching chimneys, grand cathedrals, and medieval manor-houses. As a master of the shadows, you move through the city streets unseen, avoiding the eyes (and blades) of the city's thieves' guild, while doing jobs for the various political factions. Nobles, mages or the Church, it doesn't matter, as long as the pay is good.

In technical terms, our goal is to create a complete conversion of the Doom 3 platform, turning it into a stealth-based game. We will be creating new and improved AI, and new models and textures that support a 'steampunk' genre made popular by Looking Glass Studio's "Thief" franchise.

Although we plan on making our own campaign with these new tools, our intention is to get them out to the public as soon as possible, so that fans of the "Thief" series can begin making their own missions and stories.

The Darkmod

Digital Nightfall's recent mini interview with the members of the Dark Mod team:

Q. What factions are you planning to include?
A. First of all, the goal of The Dark Mod is to give FM authors as much freedom and flexibility as possible, so in most cases it will be up to THEM which factions they want to use. At the moment though, we plan to include models and voice-sets for the Builders (a metal-working religious organization), and the Pagans (a nature-loving, gypsy like group). Plans are also in the works for a Thieves' Guild, and an organization of secretive sages.

Q. Sword or dagger or both?
A. Short sword. Someone who winds up facing zombies, treebeasts, and giant spiders is going to want something more substantial than a dagger if things get rough.

Q. How many of Garrett's other tools will be present?
A. Currently, we plan on giving our Thief character (FM authors can name him whatever they like) a set of tools that will be familiar to fans of Thief 1/2, although with one or two surprises.

Q. And about your campaign: What type of game are you planning? Single player campaign? A series of one-shot missions? Multiplayer scenarios?
A. When the mod is first released, it will include only a couple single player missions to showcase what it is capable of. A full single-player campaign from our team will follow later, but in the meantime, FM authors will have the same tools we're using. The more missions, the merrier!

Q. When in relation to the Thief Trilogy is this set, if at all? No TS spoilers please!
A. The Dark Mod is not affiliated with Looking Glass Studios or Ion Storm in any way. To avoid copyright issues, we are not directly using any characters or groups from the Thief games. Of course, FM authors will be able to use The Dark Mod tools to replicate that universe if they choose.

Q. Do you plan on re-creating any locations from the Thief Trilogy?
A. Not officially, no.

Q. And finally, please list the experience and credentials of the core team members.
