  • By: Jeremy D. Mitchell (Feanor)

Plot Description: Garrett must sneak, fight, and backstab his way through Baron Bisfult's keep in order to earn his money. 'Hard Luck' is a straight-out burglary of a noble's house; nothing complicated, but you will soon find out that life is not so simple within the walls of this keep. Just jump in and have fun thwarting the less-than-motivated guards and stealing another unworthy noble's treasure.

    Comments by David Riegel:

  • Pros: Nicely done gameplay which is well suited for different styles, reasonably solid visuals throughout the interior of the mansion, well written texts.
  • Cons: A few minor AI reactions could be improved, the exterior could be spiced-up a bit, the objectives can seem a bit unfocused, the mansion theme is nothing new.
  • Bottom Line: For a first effort, Hard Luck prooves to be a nicely designed mission that is very well balanced for its size and ambition. Gameplay is interesting and non-frustrating, the overall layout is well contrived. This mission is highly recommended for taffers looking for a short, not overly-complicated break-in mission where sneaking is highly valued.

Additional Comments: This is my first try at making a Thief mission. After many problems and infuriating mistakes, its finally ready. It's probably imperfect in many places, but hey, I think its a good first go. If you're bored, you might as well try it.I apologise for the awful name, I hate trying to think things like that up :)

Plot Description: That man was suffering such desperation that I finally decided help him. Apparently his wife had been kidnaped by Sir Terence´s men and now he has constrained to sell his lands by a ridiculous price. If it would not be enough, Lady Whitman, since that was the name of the lady, was afflicted by a rare disease and if she does not was taking her medication soon would die without solution.

Due to the threats, Lord Whitman had discarded from the beginning the possibility of attending the authorities, therefore distress and urgency had obligated him, according he said me, to appeal a thief like me.

Sir Terence´s gardener, man who Lord Whitman was relying, would be the only one help I would have to break into the building. Whitman indicated me his address and gave me the key of his house where he said I would find more instructions for the quest.

The Thief 2 version of "Lady Whitman's Disease" is almost exactly the same as the original. Of course it now looks a bit better thanks to improved Dark Engine, but that is generally the truth for every case of such conversion. There are however some changes, or at least these are the ones I've managed to spot:

Plot Description: The Trickster has been dead 30 days tonight, the world is still saved from his evil, and yet strangely I have grown darker these past weeks. But Why? Comfort from old wine cellars has been easy enough to find, and loot at the expense of my rich neighbors still pays the bills. Is this not the easy life I always wanted with no world in need of rescue?

Lisha says this darkness descended on me when my old Hammer eye gave out. But what good is the new mechanical eye the Hammers have waiting for me? Even when I had two perfectly normal human eyes I wasn't any richer than I am tonight!

Yet, as I write this, I am beginning to feel a shift in the air ...and not simply the early Autumn wind I hear blowing like it can't wait to get home to Old Man Winter. Perhaps it's just another crazy dream, but something keeps saying that my fortunes are about to change ...that the BIG one is just around the corner ...where I'll finally know the true comfort and peace of mind that comes with becoming a genuinely wealthy man!

Additional Comments: This is the origianl T1 mission which became the first mission of the T2 series Keeper of the Prophecies.

Plot Description: The autumn season of Ye Olde Lost City Playhouse is opening in a fortnight. Unfortunately, the director of this fine establishment, an old friend of mine, has some 'business' he needs me to attend to after hours. It seems he's having some difficulties with his actors. • Pros: A small mission that can be played quickly, interesting and humorous texts.
  • Cons: Choppy framerate, gameplay restricted to knockout style and running from guards, lights without a radius, inappropriate use of loud/soft surfaces.
  • Bottom Line: Night at the Theatre can provide a nice, short run-through, but is not as polished and replayable as the other missions of its size and ambition.

Plot Description: Based on the map for Garrett's Revenge, the Keepers have a mission for you. You can do what you like, break into buildings, steal anything valuable, knockout who you want (except cops on expert), hack to death who you want.

Its an early spring evening, the sun has only just set, when you finally get to your destination, the Keepers want you to find someone who has gone missing, the head Keeper of the local Keeper observation house has more details, you have been advised to meet him in a room that has been built over an arched area. You, as Garrett, has never been to this part of the city due to it being an over guarded area, due to it being next to the major shipping area controlling the current war. A curfew is in force in this area, anyone found on the streets after sunset is in serious trouble, a thief like Garrett, will be killed on sight. The last group of thieves that tried to plunder this area can be found spread around the city, their severed remains can be seen, hanging from spikes, as a warning to others.

    Comments by Marecki:

  • Pros: Very good architecture, meticulously handled background, minimal amount of window dressing, interesting plot.
  • Cons: Spelling, badly chosen textures in a few places, some minor technical quirks.
  • Bottom line: "Garrett's Revenge" was good, but there were small things that made it get only bronze. "Errand Boy" fixes most of the problems of its precedenssor, along with so many improvements that it surely deserves silver. It could be better, as there are some bugs... but then again, if any of the FMs didn't have any the Gold Hammer would have been given long ago. It was fun playing it to me even though I was actually looking for any kind of screwups, therefore it should be enjoyable for everyone else too.

Plot Description: You have been entrusted by the Keepers to recover a stolen amulet which was aquired by one of Ramirez's agents on a distant island. A ship has now returned and is in dock awaiting unloading. But you aim to unload it first...

    Additional Comments: Thief II Changes:
  • Fixed some bugs.
  • The sounds and schemas vary from the original.
  • Changed some of the more questionable texturing
  • The burricks can now run wild, causing havoc among the guards, if you're feeling mischevious.

  • Pros: Unique atmosphere, very decent architecture, main sources of frustration in T1 version were removed.
  • Cons: Could use fogging or weather where low ambient light used to be, can be finished in below 10 minutes without much strain.
  • Bottom Line: "The Docks" for Thief 2 is a piece of fan missions' history, repolished. Unfortunately minor improvements made to this version get balanced by minor problems that appeared, but neverthless it's a great choice for a session of quick and not too demanding Thief gameplay.

Plot Description: I've been hired to retrieve four ancient Talismans for a rich collector, Lord Turell. The Talismans are buried in a Tomb underneath the graveyard in an abandoned part of the city. Should be easy, although Turell has hired others before me. None of them have been seen since. Even the Hammers are rumoured to have tried.

According to Turell, a local collector named Morgan had translated some of the texts written by the ancient Masters. These Masters dabbled in the arcane and legend would have us believe the Talismans are protected by this ancient power. Morgan's translations should help me defeat this power.

Turell has provided a map of the area. My first stop should be Morgan's museum, then the local Weaponsmith to stock up. My funds are low and Turell will only pay on delivery. Maybe the Church will have some supplies I can use.

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: The map's layout is intelligent, the programming is fairly (though not entirely) flub-free, the scripting is smart (even if the plot's a bit of a retread), the atmosphere is appropriately ominous, the enemy and trap placement are both skillful and fair, and the gameplay is solid.
  • Cons: Some sound-related glitches; one or two programming slips; scarce weaponry; partly recycled plot; some spots where you can get physically stuck.
  • Bottom line: Gordon "Kozmala" Miller's Curse of the Ancients offers at least two to three good hours of absorbing gameplay, in a setting where Lara Croft would feel right at home.

Plot Description: Well, this is just great. Here I am, in this putrid cell awaiting my so called redemption to the builder of these wretched lands. Down here, I'm rarely given enough light to see my own hands, and when a watchman does cometh along with his quaint lantern and trendy water pouch, revealed become the mawkish stones on the walls, shrouded with mold so thick that any horticulturalist would rank it healthier then I am. The stench is horrible, or at least I remembered how awful it was when I could bring myself pay attention to it, and the air here is rotten enough to make rats swell up and burst from ichor they didn't even know was in them. It seems like a few days ago, though I'm not even sure I've been here for an hour yet, I was thrown into this place alledged of murder of a nobleman. I never had I killed anyone related to the esquires whose trinkets I flitted, I would have ensured myself a sensible cover-up.

Plot Description: This is your city. A black-caped lord, you survey your domain from the rooftops with pensive, cynical eyes. They are analytical eyes. Like camera shutters, they slice and assess every footfall on the midnight cobbles below. You time every pendulous swing of the lanterns and evaluate every fitful throw of shadow from one end of the street to the other. Your ears unconsciously decipher the sullen echoes of voices, machinery and wind. This is a city of metronomes where chimney pots sway to the ancient gurgle of pipes whose forlorn songs rise from throats of incurable decay. You gauge the lonely armored scrape of each city watchman as a matter of habit, for there is machination in thievery. And timing is everything. You have internalized the rhythm of movement and non-movement, the play of shadows, down to your very own pulse.... (more)

    Comments by Alex Thomson:

  • Pros: Sound story on the whole, good architecture, lots of places for the explorers to find and many technical feats.
  • Cons: Some areas of the story seem rather weak, the new tech is bugged, some of the areas are just too convenient.
  • Bottom Line: Calendra's Cistern is certainly worth the download. It is large and highly technical mission, a fact which may have allowed many people to overlook its shortcomings, the most notable of which are the bugs in the safe and the shop and the irrational reason for Garrett's undertaking the mission in the first place. As is often the case with the better missions, it is often the small things that let the mission down, and Calendra's Cistern is no exception.

    Comments by Marecki:

  • Pros: Good story with occasional peaks of excellence, impressive tech features, generally pleasant appearance, well done AI skins.
  • Cons: high mush content within the story, general feeling of emptiness in most areas, a few tech bugs, layout forces player to do roof mountaineering, many sections that wouldn't make any sense weren't they to provide more challenge for a thief, one objective that can seriously annoy even the most patient players.
  • Bottom line: As it is well known for movie buffs, a project's size doesn't guarantee its quality; furthermore, the bigger the thing the greater the chance of screwing up somewhere. And one of these seemingly irrelevant shortcomings may become a drop that fills a cup... While for some people the general impression and the easily noticable good things might completely dwarf the bad ones, a thorough look into details shows clearly there would much to improve or redo if the designers of Calendra's Cistern wanted their mission to achieve Gold.

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Solid, symmetrical architecture through the entire mansion; good use of light/shadows (especially the lighting combinations) and silent/noisy surfaces; a well plotted story written with skill; many technical/programming effects; intelligent enemy placement, patrols and distribution; deep immersiveness; a briefing and a debriefing worthy of such appellations (at last!), and economical in size, to boot.
  • Cons: Some areas are not properly scaled; the Expert-level limitation on knockouts is illogical as stated; the temple is too empty; all the dangling vines are too pat and convenient.
  • Bottom Line: For his sophomore effort, Mr Armstrong has crafted here a heist-style mission that can easily stand alongside two favorites from THIEF: THE DARK PROJECT: Lord Bafford's Manor and Assassins. His development since his first level Friends in Shadow is nothing short of phenomenal -- let's hope for all our sakes that he doesn't keep progressing at the same rate for his third mission!

  • Cons: extremely plain architecture, incoherent background, the whole mission feels rather empty and lacks atmosphere.
  • Bottom line: It is often said that what distinguishes an artist from a manufacturer is that the latter can be a technical genius, but neverthless his design will simply lack soul; it is slightly different when it comes to projects of this kind, as they require skills in both tech and art. Zail has shown with his "Archery Challenge" that he's got the first, yet both "Fishmonger" and his earlier "Immoral Immortal" show a long road lies before him before he reaches the second.

Plot Description: Two nights ago when I ordered my fifth pint of ale over at the local pub, the door slammed open and this clearly drunken fellow came in and sat next to me. I was about to seat myself at another table when he turned and presented himself; "-Walken", he said, "Terrence Walken", he added. I didn't want to seem rude so I chatted with him for a while. He told me he owned his own plumbing company and about the problems of installing sewerpipes big enough to hold a man into solid rock. I told him I was in the carpenting business and asked where he had worked recently. It turns out he'd been doing some renovating over at Lord Baffords TwelveThorne estate.
