By: Steven Hindley

Plot Description: "Garrett's Revenge" earlier in the night you robbed the vault of the Hammerite bank. After which you returned to your room at the inn, you can hear the Hammerites searching for who is responsible for the robbery, it only takes one Hammer to check the registry in the local inn to see if there is anyone new in this part of town. In the bar below your room you were met by another keeper, who had some items you might find useful, for a price. You go to your room together to sort out a deal, you hear from him that the gate to the docks is open, the Hammer's opened it to escort some drunk guards somewhere. The game starts where you are dealing with the keeper.

Hammer Score: 2.0 of 10
Comments by Reviewer:
Andrew Dagilis: Pros: The map has a lot of places to visit (though few of them look good). No lack of guards to blackjack, once you get one. Cons: The architecture, the textures, the ornamentation, some object location -- the map is almost entirely lacking in esthetics. Some must-find objects can be quite frustrating to locate. The "New Objectives" chimes are heard too often and unnecessarily. Bottom line: This level has a good, though standard, basic premise, but it's not handled or developed with any originality. The decor is almost uniformly hard on the eyes, which makes it even more unfortunate that you'll spend so much time in it hunting for particular objects.

Thief 2 Fan Mission
More Time to Foil Karrass

 Filesize: 2 MB
 Released: 2/7/2000
 readme.txt

By: Adrian May (Nirvana)

Plot Description: This is the mission after Masks. Garrett is sent out to capture a mechanist servant for Viktoria to analyse and to hopefully learn more of Karrass's plans. The mission involves a quick trip into a small mansion then onto Viktoria's Agent's house on easy, but on expert level you also have to rob an art Gallery, break into the local Armoury and a nobles mansion to find ut how his Burricks have been performing so well.

Additional Comments: This is sort of a Mission 14b. I thought the plot of Thief 2 jumped too much at the end, with Garrett being in the dark for the whole game and then suddenly knowing everything at the start of the last mission. So I'm hoping to create a steadier plot "curve".

Hammer Score: 4.5 of 10
Comments by Reviewer:
Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Good sense of overall mission design; competent use of light/shadows and silent/noisy surfaces; resupply points are well located; a burrick racetrack and stable; mission can be snuck through in its entirety.
  • Cons: Programming errors, one of which can make the mission unwinnable; some areas are not properly scaled; amateur-looking shoebox exterior architecture and rudimentary sense of interior design.
  • Bottom line: Because its core gameplay components are solid, More Time to Foil Karrass (sic) easily overcomes its esthetic limitations and offers a few hours of pleasant sneaking. With a bit more practice, there's little doubt its author will produce missions with a more professional sheen.

    Comments by Reviewer:
Comments by Ken Ramsley: • Pros: Relatively bug free, realistic setting, lots of places to go. • Cons: Too long, lackluster story, shopping-list feeling. Too many over-pumped guards often protecting nothing worth fighting for. • Bottom Line: Lots of real estate, some interesting custom items and effects, but nothing much to establish or carry a story.

    Comments by Second Opinion Reviewer:
Comments by Andrew Dagilis: • Pros: Solidly well thought-out interiors and exteriors, custom textures and sounds, no contrived "gotcha!" traps. • Cons: Some technical/programming slip-ups, some featureless rooms (admittedly, in buildings you don't have to visit), random stitched-together plotline with several slapped-on, unmotivated objectives. • Bottom Line: The designer obviously took great pains in creating his Austro-Swisslike town and all aspects thereof. Sadly, his architectural achievement is undermined by slipshod plotting and merely average scripting. Such a well designed setting deserves plot underpinnings of equal quality; unfortunately, the plotting feels a bit hodgepodgey, as if it's being made up as you go along.

The Vigil is a very clean, well written, well designed level Mission If you have not played "Lord Edmund" then you should play it first before participating in "The Vigil" so that you may experience the full potential of both missions.

And he took the goblet, thanked everyone, and said: "Take this and share it among yourselves".
"I say this to you: Henceforth, I do not drink the bounty of the vineyard, before into Gods Kingdom I go.
And he took the bread, thanked everyone, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples and said, "This is my body, that will be given in behalf of you. Please, do it for my memory."
In the same way he blessed the wine from WOODEN GOBLET. After the meal he said, "This goblet is a symbol of my blood, what will be sacrificed on your behalf."
After Jesus death, disciples retained the Holy Grail, for his memory. Later it becamed the holy symbol of a Christian church.

    Comments by Jussi Lehtinen:

  • Pros: Pretty as a picture, nicely thought out, seemed free of design flaws.
  • Cons: No cons worth mentioning
  • Bottom Line: More masterful architecture from Mokkis, and for the most part, an enjoyable mission. In some parts, however, the gameplay is a bit unimaginative. To sum it up, a superior effort, and a mission well worth anyone's attention.

    By: Triston Attridge (Totality)

Plot Description: Times are hard. The incident in Peteroski did not help. I should have known better than to trust Iron, but he paid for it. The unfortunate side effect is that I am here, in this village of Winterhelm, the laughing stock of the whole county and stuck here with not an iota of help, and out of cash.

I need my reputation to be spotless, and lucklily, someone is available to provide for it. Apparently there is a local noble by the name of Theron who is the devil on everyone's lips, he is not well liked.

Rumour has it the he is a drug baron of sorts, the caves under the village are stocked with the mushroom nocturnis, which makes an extremely strong liquor once distilled which is also narcotic. He owns the constabulary and is apparently making a very tidy profit, enough to buy a few sacred treasures. After, well, let us say persuading a former servant who was ejected I have a rough idea of the layout of the manor, and the goods that are contained within. The most exceptional of this is the Orb, an item rumoured to be that of magic, but we all know about those sort of things don't we? There's also the Ankh of Mishra, a religous plaything, and perhaps more tangible there is the Golden egg of Tut. They should all fetch some revenue....(more)

  • Bottom Line: Great gameplay, too simple story - though better than a great story with hopeless gameplay and definitely worth checking out, it's just very good instead of excellent.

    By: Gonchong (James D. Roberts)

Plot Description: "I'm in deep now. I retrieved the Horn Of Chaos from the Hammer compound just four days ago. It seems like an age now. The job went well: guards, traps, gates - nothing I can't handle. After getting the horn home and preparing to fence it I hear word on the street is that the Hammers are furious - and scared. That horn must be more than a mere trinket to them and it will be impossible to fence it off now in the City. Time to leave. I've got a trustworthy Southdock contact, Fleur, who can arrange passage for me to a place called Willow Island - home to some wealthy -and discreet- art collectors. I'm leaving tonight... I can't stay any longer as the Hammers are breaking down the door of anyone they suspect of this crime - and heads are rolling. Fleur's house isn't too far away but I'll have to watch out for Hammer patrols - I'm a known thief and sure to be next on their list." On his way to Fleur's Garrett has been ambushed by a pair of Hammerites. He hears gates slam shut as they surround him. He struggles free and runs. A Hammerite notches up a fire crystal and takes aim...

Not much that we haven't seen before, but what's there is fun and has been well executed. If you're looking for some more of that regular thieving action that charmed us all when Thief came out, bow down your head under the Hammer.

Plot Description: Switcher, the friend of mine came to me with the strange request. He lost the contact with his son Mike, who is a memeber of the Mage's Guild. And he is afraid that there something happened, since before that Mike regulary visited him. He will pay for this and also has provided me with some information. First, he gave me a map (oh, at least that's how he calls that worthless piece of paper), second he told me about 'Ancient Crown' - a valuable item which buried somewhere in that forest where mage's guild in. He said that some fellows before me tried to find it,.. but nobody returned back. So, I guess I must be carefull there. Also he said something about magical Sceptre and that he knows some people very interested in it. In this case I should try to locate and extract it (of course only if mages are gone). And of course I'll take all the loot that might be there. I think It will be interesting jorney.

Plot Description: Beyond the East hills lies an old Hammerite prison that hasn't been used for decades. No one ever goes there anymore and it's supposedly haunted. I don't enjoy dealing with the undead and I never thought about the prison until now. I was approached by an old man named Bando today who noticed me practicing to be inconspicuous in the city streets, a keeper talent I never was able to perfect. It turns out that Bando seems to have been born with similar "talents" as me. He was even taken in by the Keepers at one point but was later kicked out for "not being the one" as he put it. So he earned his keep as a rather successful freelance thief in his youth. Bando had spent some time in the prison when it was in use. He later returned to search for his late wife's brooch and other possesions that were confiscated from him after it had been overrun by undead, assuming that undead don't hold grudges like Hammers. He says he's not able to pay me for the job but he's offered to teach what he knows about the skill of "inconspicuous walking". He also told me about a holy sword held within the complex that would aid in battling the undead. Bando's brooch and the sword will most likely be in the same place. He says a good way to enter the closed off prison is to lower myself through one of the old kitchen chimneys.

Comments by Tels: • Pros: Pros: Great athmosphere, great architecture, well laid room layout, very creppy ambient sounds, unlinear level design, some unquie puzzles and a fitting story. Beside the few bugs, there are not heaps of minor flaws like in many other FMs. • Cons: Bugs may prevent you from completing it. Fortunately, most people were not hit by the bugs. Unfortunately, I was hit by all of them in a row. Which just proves that you want me to be the beta-tester of your next level :) • Bottom Line: A very creepy, goosebumbs-all-over, at-the-edge-of-your-sword level which makes for some very good hours of gameplay. It is the third FM I ever was eager to play and actually trying to complete it, so go figure :)

Plot Description: So, You're a Master Thief. You've stolen from Constantine, you've stolen from Lord Rothchest, Edmund and all the others. You've stolen from a god, for heaven's sake! It's about time you got a place of your own...not an apartment. A house, or maybe a cottage...Yes. A cottage in Lampfire Hills. In the north outskirts of this gear-grinding city, lies the peaceful (though sternly ruled) district of Lampfire Hills. Now that you are out of debt you've even given some consideration to retiring there... Until you noticed something peculiar about your new cottage. This mission is a surprise with (hopefully) story at the fore. Hence you'll want to explore your cottage and lawn thoroughly before venturing into the district of Lampfire Hills. A full briefing waits in your journal downstairs. Oh, by the way, you can afford to hire a henchman now that you're out of debt...a front gate guard of your own...so don't go killing everyone you first see...he's difficult to replace. Lastly, remember, you own the place...so for once in your life you don't have to sneak around...to begin with anyway...

Although cramped in some areas, the architecture is pleasing to the eye; especially the city streets. I'd recommend it to veteran thieves who are ready to sit in a dark corner and think about the text they've just read and what they've just seen.
