Tome 1: The Weeping Sky

Mission 1 (3)

Base the mission around the following diary extracts, written by Ryalla. The diary should be placed either at the beginning of the mission or used as part of the briefing.

17/03

This damned rain is endless. You just have to step outside for five minutes and you're drenched through. Good weather for working in though, if you don't mind a little damp and cold. The rain's so heavy the guards hardly ever lift their eyes from the ground as they trudge around on patrol. They tend to stick to the more sheltered areas as well, only moving off their paths to avoid the deepening puddles that fill the streets.

18/03

They doubled the patrols yesterday, sent out word by crier that the whole city's under curfew until the fuel shortage is dealt with. Seems they're saving the lamp gas for the more important buildings about here. The post office is lit up like a star while the surrounding streets and buildings are black as pitch. An occasional torch somehow manages to defy the weather and keep burning, but for the most part the night has become a paradise for the likes of me. The guards have orders to arrest anyone seen outside after sunset, but it would take a fool to be spotted in this weather.

20/03

I had an unexpected visitor this day. Chiodo. I haven't seen the man since I left his service when I was just a kid. Forgot to ask him how he managed to find me - guess he still has some of the old contacts. I used to be his runner back when he was little more than a big-shot thief nicknamed The Naja. I acted as a go-between for him and his "suppliers". He was an importer, mainly of alcohol - acquired through the use of ill-gotten funds, of course.

Seems things have changed since then. He claims to have gone legit. Says he's got a commission as a mail runner between The City and the outlying islands. His ships, all with those fancy new motors fitted, make the trips once or twice a month, weather permitting. Seems he's picked up a title along the way -- now it's LORD Bruzzo Chiodo. Or so he claims. None of that explained what he really wanted from me though. I nearly threw him out before he had a chance to say, he was taking so long to get to the point.

His son, Marcasso, is due to marry the daughter of one of Chiodo's blueblood business partners. Chiodo doesn't want the marriage jeopardised by his past and chose me for the job of making sure it doesn't. He suggested I start by hunting down his old partner, Jakku, a man he hasn't even seen in three years. Last anyone heard Jakku had made a new home for himself in the slums, where he spends most of his time drunk out of his skull. I just need to track him down, turn his house over and make sure any damaging evidence is destroyed. Easy money.

Set objectives:

  • Locate Jakku's house
  • To be introduced when Ryalla finds a key marked "Postal strongbox key" in Jakku's house: Use the key found in Jakku's house to open the appropriate safety deposit box in the post office

    Set texts:

Within the deposit box should be a number of texts covering the following subjects:

  • The original plans for the ships Chiodo is using
  • Correspondence between Jakku and Chiodo about the smuggling of alcohol
  • Details of how Chiodo claimed the ships' plans as his own and used them to advance himself whilst leaving Jakku penniless
  • Mention of meetings during that period between Chiodo and Count Rivell - with a note that Rivell is currently away from the city on a hunting trip

    Mission 2: (1)

Base the mission around the following diary extracts, written by Ryalla. The diary should be placed either at the beginning of the mission or used as part of the briefing.

    16/04

I've had a quite a time tracking down Count Rivell - for a Count he's not exactly well known. I finally made a breakthrough last night when I stumbled across one of his retainers, just returned from the hunting trip Rivell was on. The man was ridiculously easy to bribe - apparently Rivell pays his staff worse than that old fool Ramirez!

The retainer was able to tell me precious little, though. Rivell's mansion is located near the northern end of the city. The Olger River crosses his land in the south and gets siphoned off into several irrigation ditches to water the neighbouring fields. My erstwhile spy delighted in informing me that the security there is intense. He pointed out that the Mechanist Order - a recent splinter-group of the Hammerites - had recently installed a system designed with people like me in mind. He also rambled a bit about spikes shooting out of walls and giant pits swallowing intruders whole unless they were "protected". A pity I won't see the smile wiped off his face when he discovers how wrong he is.

    18/04

I've just spent the day posing as a flower seller so I could get close to Count Rivell's estate and scout it from outside. The front reminds me more of a fortress than a town house. The doors are guarded by two very alert-looking guards - the younger one's eyes never left me the whole time I was there. All the lower windows were secured with iron bars. When I approached the young guard to offer him a rose I'm certain I heard the sound of a camera operating within. I'll have to find another way in.

I did overhear something interesting whilst I was there. Apparently Rivell has just acquired a new set of antique paintings and is having them delivered sometime tomorrow. It would seem the stinginess he shows to his staff does not extend to himself or his surroundings.

    19/04

A second day of scouting proved to be a mild success. The river the retainer referred to penetrates the outer wall of Rivell's rear gardens at one point. Normally there is large grate blocking debris - and people - from going through, but the continuous drizzle has caused the river to flow higher than normal. The increased pressure has buckled the grate, leaving an opening just big enough for me to squeeze through.

There are at least three guards patrolling the garden beyond, possibly more. I wasn't equipped to go in any further but I did catch the sound of one of those motorised cameras not too far away. I'll nip out early in the morn and get myself some supplies. I still have money left from the Jakku job, so that's one less worry. I wonder if there are any dealers hereabouts who'd be interested in a few newly acquired paintings...?

    Set Objectives:

  • Get inside Rivell's Mansion
  • Locate any documents relating to Chiodo
  • Generated at the appropriate point in the mission - Find the duplicate documents Rivell made
  • Generated at the appropriate point in the mission - Find the codebook so you can decode the documents

    Set Texts:

  • Several texts accounting Rivell's past deeds and his present source of income: widespread blackmail of the City's nobility. These dossiers should mention the indiscretions of many members of the aristocracy in several of the following areas: illegitimate children, embezzlement, having relatives eliminated to inherit property, adultery (especially when it's the wife who has most of the money), black marketeering, trading in spice, trading in slaves, noblewomen secretly having abortions
  • An account of how Rivell became a count - he used to be a fairly high player in the royal spy network but was too greedy, played all sides against the middle once too often and was sacked from the service. By that time he already had huge files on the nobles (rulers like to know what their underlings are all about) and a ready network of greedy spies, just as crooked as he, so Count Rivell was born.
  • A dossier on Chiodo, revealing how Rivell gained him his title (only nobles are allowed to bid for Royal commissions) and his Royal mail commission, both through bribery, blackmail and the "accidental death" of the mail commission's previous awardee. This dossier is in code.
  • The code book
  • A bill for the Mechanists' equipment that reveals Chiodo as its purser.

    Mission 3 (1)

Base the mission around the following diary extracts, written by Ryalla. The diary should be placed either at the beginning of the mission or used as part of the briefing.

    17/05

There is nothing I detest more than Hammerite know-it-alls! I had the misfortune of running in to some on my way down to the market today. They were recruiting for their little pilgrimage, trying to encourage the "common people" to come with them on their journey to find the Builder. The flame-throwing priest and his soldier brethren are staying in a small run-down inn near the shipyards for a week whilst they gather to them a little flock of gullible sheep for the journey. Half-an-hour I had to stand there and listen to their jabbering. Half-an-hour!

    18/05

Another day, another robbery, as they say. Well, as I say really. Not a particularly productive one either. Broke into minor merchant's home, stole a few precious goods, annoyed a few guards and made my way back here. I was rather disturbed to find one of Chiodo's more unsavoury associates waiting for me when I got back. The man was covered from head to toe in grime and he stank nearly as badly as the open sewers in the slums. He was after a report on my progress. I told him all I considered suitable for the ears of an underling, which wasn't much. I had found several items pointing to Chiodo's less wholesome deeds and destroyed them as asked. I was currently looking into another lead, but couldn't speak of it just yet. The encounter did have a positive side, however. It reminded me I owed Chiodo a visit.

    19/05

Chiodo is out of town and will be so for at least a week. He left this morning on a business trip with his soon-to-be brother-in-law. Just what I didn't need! There's only one option left. If the answers aren't to be given, they shall have to be taken. I need to find information on this "Cavador" fellow mentioned in Rivell's notes. It's likely the fellow has ties to Chiodo, in which case I'll need to take care of them.

The important documents are no doubt located in the shipyards, but those buildings are too vast to be wasting time searching every one of them. No doubt Chiodo will have the details I need to narrow my search in one of his many houses. The one near the shipyards seems the likeliest choice. It's not a particularly large abode. Just the top floor of a three-storey building a short walk from the 'yards. I'll head there tonight and follow the clues I find. Better dress warmly - looks like a thunderstorm's brewing.

    Set objectives:

  • Find the documents in Chiodo's flat
  • Generated at the appropriate point in the mission - Head down to the shipyard and locate the building in Chiodo's notes
  • Generated at the appropriate point in the mission - Gain access to the archives and take the appropriate files
  • Generated at the appropriate point in the mission - Infiltrate the adjoining workshop-temple
  • Generated at the appropriate point in the mission - Find some way to distract the Mechanists in the temple so you can steal Cavador's documents

    Set texts:

  • A document in Chiodo's flat that refers to the naval HQ's top secret archives - and notes which building is the HQ
  • A document in Chiodo's flat stating that he has struck a deal with the Mechanists to have their security installed in his shipyard to protect the mechanist machinery in operation there
  • A document in the HQ that names the secret archive's location within the building.
  • A document identifying which files Ryalla needs to take from the thousands in the archives
  • Information in the archives revealing how Chiodo runs his shipping empire - some suggestions might include stealing plans and trade routes from rival shippers, sabotaging their shipyards, buying off the competition's best crews and skippers, hiring pirates to sink and plunder rival ships at sea, etc.
  • A letter about the next-door Mechanist workshop-temple
  • A text pointing to DelMaris, the man who introduced Chiodo to Cavador
