Give Player and AIs Realistic Footsteps
Explanation:
Currently, Garrett sounds as if he is wearing tap-dancing shoes, which is absurd, since his goal as a master thief is to be quiet. Instead of giving Garrett hard-soled boots to challenge the player, implement creaky floor-boards and rusty catwalks, etc. That is, make the surfaces themselves the source of the noise and not Garrett's impractical footwear. Garrett's footsteps by themselves should sound like a virtually inaudible rolling and padding of leather mocassin soles.
Points to bear in mind:
Increases realism, but keeps the challenge.
Would transform the severe extremes of differing surfaces into a more moderate balance; now, carpet isn't necessarily always a saving grace (might be a creaky floor underneath),where as tile and metal aren't necessarily your enemies).
Forces players to use their heads more and stay on their toes -transforming the art of sneaking into the complex and dynamic skill it really is.
Rewards players who play it smart with the silence of a true master thief, increasing the immersive grip of the game and adding to the pride of being able to play Garrett.
The player would have more flexibility when sneaking, since Garrett's footsteps aren't as loud, and so can't be heard from as far away. This would allow the player to flit quickly from hiding place to hiding place, without alerting everyone nearby.
Because guards would not be nearly as loud either, it would be more difficult for the player to hear them coming from a distance-forcing the player to stay still and listen very carefully in order to detect if someone is approaching.
This would necessitate the elimination of moss arrows (which many believe are far too silly anyway), thereby simplifying Garrett's inventory.
Has anyone ever been in one of those old cavern-like mansions/castles? Your shoes DO sound like that, and back in the day the soles wouldn't be as soft as we have now.
FACT: mocassins existed long before hard soles.
BOOTS with moccassin SOLES.
I don't beleave a Thief like Garret would trade his stylish boots in for some slipper-like shoes.
