Thunder and Lightning
Explanation:
Thunder and lightning would vastly increase tension within a level. Not only does it sound good, but the flashes of lighting could prove difficult to a hiding thief.
Points to bear in mind:
Perhaps could be the first game to implement thunder and lightning the right way round (though this would mean that the player has no warning that they are about to be lit up)
This should add to the dark mood in the game, kind of like in "Clive Barker's Undying". Thunderstorms would fit into a thief game perfectly.
This is already a part of the Unreal Engine. (It wouldn't be the first to do lightning right.)
