By: Jeremy Justus

Comments by Reviewer:
Greyhawk: A small and plain level, but it is still enjoyable to play. A nice diversion for a half-hour, but not as complex as most levels out there. Bring a flashlight!

Thief 1 / Gold Fan Mission
Poor Lord Bafford

 Filesize: 1.14 MB
 Released: 6/4/1999
 readme.txt

By: JordanCS

Plot Description: Lord Bafford, the wealthiest man around, has supposedly gone broke on gambling, I know that this is false. Cutty's given me the real story. Bafford is hiding all of his loot at his country home. this place is rarely visited by outsiders, but it is heavily guarded. The stash of over 2000 loot is somewhere in an underground room. Since no one has been inside, my map is simply an outside sketch. Bafford has one thing I like him for. He hates the Hammers, and has managed to amass quite a collection of Hammer artifacts. Of particular interest is the Scroll of The Builder. That may come in handy when dealing with the Hammers in the Future. It's up to me to make the rumors about Bafford true......

Comments by Garrett88: In my experience playing this level, I found that I liked the overall level design and the gameplay, but I disliked the non-randomness ( lack of a better term ) of the treasure.

    Sword of Drakul

     Released: 9/6/1999
     readme.txt

    By: Michael Webb

Plot Description: Unbeknownst to the naive townspeople, the evil Count Vlad, using the ancient Sword of Drakul is slowly building his minion force. Kill Vlad and steal the Sword of Drakul for yourself.

    Hammer Score: 4.0 of 10

CEC UA: Sword of Drakul, a good first attempt into the land of fan missions, seems to be held down by object and loot placement, lighting, or lack thereof, and general mediocrity throughout. A good Story raises this slightly above average, and the thrill of outrunning a zombie still remains as an olympic sport.

Plot Description: That man was suffering such desperation that I finally decided help him. Apparently his wife had been kidnaped by Sir Terence´s men and now he has constrained to sell his lands by a ridiculous price. If it would not be enough, Lady Whitman, since that was the name of the lady, was afflicted by a rare disease and if she does not was taking her medication soon would die without solution.

Due to the threats, Lord Whitman had discarded from the beginning the possibility of attending the authorities, therefore distress and urgency had obligated him, according he said me, to appeal a thief like me.

Sir Terence´s gardener, man who Lord Whitman was relying, would be the only one help I would have to break into the building. Whitman indicated me his address and gave me the key of his house where he said I would find more instructions for the quest.

    Comments by Marecki :

The Thief 2 version of "Lady Whitman's Disease" is almost exactly the same as the original. Of course it now looks a bit better thanks to improved Dark Engine, but that is generally the truth for every case of such conversion. There are however some changes, or at least these are the ones I've managed to spot:

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Good layout once you're inside the main house. Nice (though abrupt) twist ending.
  • Cons: Some of the town's architecture, like the strewing of your equipment all over the map, is too contrived to be believable. Difficult to get back out of the house once you drop in, unless you find the secret passage.
  • Bottom line: A nice way to while away an hour if you're not a stickler for architectural believability, especially once you finally get all your stuff back and tackle the house. Mr Garcia still has things to learn about mapmaking but already has a number of good things to offer -- how about another one?

It was very early in the morning, then you heard a tapping at the door, "Who the hell could that be?" you ask yourself, you blow out the candle beside your bed and grab your sword. You sneak to the door with your sword held in front of you. You reach for the door knob and then you see it turning, you quickly press yourself against the wall and hold your sword above your head, the door opens slightly, you see a pair of eyes peep through. Then the door opens halfway, and then a whisper, "Garret, is't thou here?". You then begin to realize who it is, it is a pagan sent by Viktoria. You then leap out in front of him and scare him half to death!. You invite him in and you get talking.

    Plot Description: Dear Garret,

We have been keeping an eye on the Hammers these last few months. Keeper Lukas infiltrated their order and has been passing information to us regarding their activities. It seems during extending their underground tombs they discovered an ancient temple. The markings of this temple are familiar to us. Their people stole a Talisman from us a long time ago. We thought it lost until now.

Keeper Lukas tried to retrieve it along with a thief named Felix. It should have been a simple job but for the greediness of Felix. The Hammers caught him as he tried to raid a tomb. Keeper Lukas managed to escape but we have not heard from Felix, nor do we want to...(more)

    Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: The mission is well thought out, paced smoothly and gradually increases in difficulty. The Hammerites have been individualized.
  • Cons: The architecture, both interior and exterior, is simplistic and very boxy. The pedestal buttons at the end are a bit unwieldy. The 5000 loot requirement in Expert is a mite high. Too thinly populated inside.
  • Bottom line: This level offers about two hours of good sneaking and skulking (on Expert mode), with several moments of tension. The plot is a fairly standard THIEF heist, and architecture isn't the author's forte, but the mission's layout -- your progression through it -- is woven together fairly nicely.

  • No Briefing Version (readme.txt)

  • By: Paul Buckley

Plot Description: The mission is based on the Dark Project series. Shortly after stealing the final talisman from the hammers Garrett was tailed en route to the haunted cathedral and was forced into a struggle with one hammerite guard in particular. This struggle led to Garrett being forced into dropping one of the talismans, the talisman of fire. He could just pick it up, but there is one small problem, the talisman of fire fell into an uncovered drain and dissapeared out of sight. Garrett must retrieve the fire talisman and get to the cathedral area, but its not as simple as it sounds.

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Lots of places to visit (though few are esthetic). It's supposed to fit into THIEF's plotline. Pointless but well done opening teaser with good accompanying soundtrack.
  • Cons: The town's architecture and layout is poor -- you never mistake it for anywhere real. Several programming glitches. Too little attention paid to seamlessly integrating this level into THIEF's continuity.
  • Bottom line: Though the first half is somewhat dull and uneventful, traipsing through the sewer maze in the latter portion does have its moments.

Plot Description: You were informed about the corrupt Lord Weston having a secret love affair with Lady Barron, whose husband recently died in suspicious circumstances. Most likely the couple had something to do with the death of Lord Barron, a loved and well-respected man.

Lord Weston has given the Lady some very expensive jewelry, but she keeps them at a secret hiding place as long as there's still some commotion about the death of Lord Barron. Only when things are back to normal, she can afford to be seen in public with Lord Weston and show her precious jewels.

So this is the right time to relieve the widow of her treasures, and while you're looking for secret hiding places, loot the place as well. Also, try to find some evidence against the Lady and her secret lover.

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

    • Pros: For a first effort of very modest scope and ambition, it navigates its safe path without any major stumbles.
    • Cons: Some unfortunate texture choices and juxtapositions, cramped rooms, THIEF GOLD required to finish it, illogical exit objective, areas where Garrett can be struck down by inexplicable brain embolisms.
    • Bottom line: Given that the designer was merely getting her feet wet with this level, it would be unfair to penalize this mission for not accomplishing things that it never set out to do. It would be equally untrue to claim that it offers enough of a challenge to be deeply interesting. The mildness of its fun-factor is in direct proportion with the extreme modesty of its ambitions.
