By: Tore Bekken (twindreamer)

Plot Description: "There's a noblewoman who lives in the neighborhood and she owns a valuable gold skull called The Skull Of Herzeloyde. I will steal it from her tonight. It should yield a nice little profit. The house is protected by tough guards so I have to be careful. If they see me I'm in real trouble. Once I'm inside I will have to locate Liselle, the Lady's handmaiden. She will help me get the key to the room with the skull. She and I were quite friendly some time back. I think she's in love with me, but she's not my type really. I'll just play along until she gives me the key. Once I have the key I will be able to get the gold skull. Then I plan to slip quietly back out to the streets."

Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: The overall architecture, the servants's flee points, the rhythm of the gameplay flow.
  • Cons: The basic premise is verging on the overused; the two puzzles might leave a few players unenlightened.
  • Bottom line: Though it's a bit derivative at its base, The Skull of Herzeloyde also has several clever wrinkles, is quite well constructed, sports some solid architectural flair, plays fair with THIEF's heist-type conventions and is generally quite a pleasant mission to play..

Plot Description: "All the mess has began when I escaped from the City to the HighRock town. City's major has organized a big round-up, all my hideout were revealed and I barely escaped his guards. All my stuff remained there, but this is not important for now, because I'm just mad of what was happened recently... I met another thief in Highrock one night. He was almost catched by local guard when I black- jacked the second and such saved thief's freedom. His name was Switcher. He was very grateful and offered his services. Soon I got the rich information about locals nobles and goldbags. Switcher became my friend. I liked that fellow. He was honest and straight-forward guy. Of course all this made bad thief from him....(more)

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: A large, intricate town with elaborate architecture and dozens upon dozens of places you can enter; many technical innovations; several minor puzzles to solve; very good Thief-play in the urban part of the mission.
  • Cons: Many interiors don't match the brilliance of the exteriors; an unfair "gotcha!" trap; more unavoidable fencing with haunts; a hackneyed mano a mano slugfest with a pumped-up end-level boss in a game specifically designed to avoid such tired FPS clichés.
  • Bottom line: Events in Highrock is a large and ambitious level filled with intricate architecture and several technical innovations that offers players a rich setting for hours of exploration and thievery. Unfortunately, the mission's high overall quality drops by a few notches once you leave the town, becoming restrictively linear and filled with combat, little of which can be avoided.

Lower Range: 4 -- There's nothing actually wrong this mission, but it does require a fair bit of sludging through sewers and other wet areas... which might not be to your taste.

Upper Range: 6.5 -- A good mission if you like conventional, unconfusing Thief gameplay.

Plot Description: Well, it's not how you'd planned to spend the evening, one dead body already and it's not even midnight. It had started out reasonably promisingly, a quite evening at your favourite watering hole and a nice simple job lined up for when the night was darker and the guards sleepier. That was until Skeller tried to jump you, he didn't really have a chance, you heard him coming well in advance, and when he pulled his dagger it was all over for him. At least something went well, he was even more incompetent than he first seemed and was carrying a note from his employer.

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Solid architecture throughout; skillful use of light/shadows, silent/noisy surfaces; an Expert level that justifies that appellation, with difficult objectives that actually fit the plot; good sense of color and guard distribution.
  • Cons: A few patrol patterns are too simple and/or slow; my upteenth maze; a puzzle that might stump the more deductively-challenged.
  • Bottom line: Do you enjoy the rush of having snuck by everybody in a difficult mission? Then stop wasting time reading this and click on the download link, you won't regret it -- but keep your finger close to the F12 key while in Expert mode.

  • No Briefing Version (readme.txt)

  • By: Paul Buckley

Plot Description: The mission is based on the Dark Project series. Shortly after stealing the final talisman from the hammers Garrett was tailed en route to the haunted cathedral and was forced into a struggle with one hammerite guard in particular. This struggle led to Garrett being forced into dropping one of the talismans, the talisman of fire. He could just pick it up, but there is one small problem, the talisman of fire fell into an uncovered drain and dissapeared out of sight. Garrett must retrieve the fire talisman and get to the cathedral area, but its not as simple as it sounds.

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Lots of places to visit (though few are esthetic). It's supposed to fit into THIEF's plotline. Pointless but well done opening teaser with good accompanying soundtrack.
  • Cons: The town's architecture and layout is poor -- you never mistake it for anywhere real. Several programming glitches. Too little attention paid to seamlessly integrating this level into THIEF's continuity.
  • Bottom line: Though the first half is somewhat dull and uneventful, traipsing through the sewer maze in the latter portion does have its moments.

Plot Description: The biggest news in town is that one of the local Hammerite temples to the north was just raided. Several key artifacts were taken from the temple grounds, and the Hammers themselves were left butchered and torn apart. The word on the street is that the job was pulled off by a group of unknown, independent thieves, but the Keepers have found a way to get you a more accurate description of what happened.

Apparently, the job was pulled by a cult calling themselves The Resurrection. Comprised mostly of ex-bandits and thieves, the group has been on a mad quest to collect a number of arcane relics for use in some bizarre rituals. The group is headed by a woman, shrouded in mystery, who the Keepers have found to be obsessed with the return of the Trickster. Convinced that his return to the realm of the living is imminent, she has been recruiting various rogues into her dark organization to carry out her bizarre schemes. The recent raid on the Hammerite temple is testimony to power and fanaticism of both the leader and the cult itself.

The target of this most recent attack was none other than the fabled Spirit Stone - a blood red gem supposedly imbued with the powers to grant life. Not surprisingly, the Keepers would like you to find out where the cult is hiding it and steal it back. However, the cult is quite cunning, and although the Keepers were able to follow several of the members back to an old, walled-off section of the city, they have no idea where their hideout is. They want you to find their fortress and descend into the depths, stealing back what was taken by whatever means necessary.

Ordinarily, you don't take this kind of job due to the risk factor, but you don't anyone out there giving thieves a bad name. And, if the cult has been collecting artifacts, they're bound to have a horde of loot down there just ripe for the taking…

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Solid architecture, skillful use of ambient sounds/music, three levels of difficulty are now three different playing styles, good plot and story development, new enemies, new types of objectives
  • Cons: A few spots where you can get stuck between objects; some pointless invisible walls; too few guards in certain areas; a puzzle that might stump the more deductively-challenged.
  • Bottom Line: Download this mission right away and say goodbye to your family -- they won't be seeing you for a while.
