By: Gonchong (James D. Roberts)

Plot Description: I was contacted by a wizened, grey haired gent who asked me to procure a book for him. Not just any book, he said, but a powerful occult tome called the Necronomicon, by one Abdul Alhazred. He says copies are very rare, particulary as the Hammerites reguard it as blasphemous. Rumours are they have a copy in their stronghold of knowledge, Beggingham Keep, and are bent on destroying all others.

Which brings us to an eccentric scholar called Fistral. He reputedly obtained a copy for a high price from a far country, for use in secret experiments. He died along with his wife a while back. No one knows how and locals won't even go near his old place. Recently a party of Hammerities set out to see if they could obtain and destroy the book and raze the house to the ground. They were not heard of again.

Which is where I come in. I just need to go in, get the Book, and come out again. I hope it's that simple...

Comments by Jussi Lehtinen: A mission where the designer has obviously set his goals very high. Unfortunately, I don't think he achieved what he set out to do, probably due at least as much to the limitations of DromEd as the skills of the builder. If you like an atmosphere of gloom, death and decay, as many of us do, then this mission is right up your alley.

Thief 1 / Gold Fan Mission
Treasury

 Filesize: 1.89 MB
 Released: 11/7/1999
 readme.txt

 Walkthrough

By: Bryan Matthews

Plot Description: The Treasury is a medium sized Mission crammed full of Technical effects. You overheard a conversation by a drunken Sergeant in the Stags Head a few nights back. He ran his mouth about some underground workings believed to be mythical and supposedly made by Craymen. Although highly intoxicated the Sergeant was insistent that they did exist. He also hinted at the fact that this could be another way into the impregnable Hammer Treasury. Working for other people can reap rewards but this sounds like a Mission just for your benefit. You have enlisted the help of a petty thief called Mad Sam who has agreed to help you gain entry to the Executioners yard tonight. He does bear somewhat of a grudge after some ill treatment meted out to him last month by the Hammers.Note: Heed the fact that not all that glitters is gold. If it looks like it should work it probably does! This Mission has a high humor content and certain ironies do manifest throughout the Level. A walkthrough will be released in around a weeks time. Have fun and try not to meet your Waterloo! ( You will understand the aptness of this word in more ways than one by the time you finish this Mission.)

Comments by Brain "Junkyman" Junk: • Pros: Lots of creative technical enhancements, nice architecture, good AI, and overall gameplay. • Cons: Puzzles can be very frustrating, too much 'save, try again, save, try again....' • Bottom Line: I think it can safely be said that this mission breaks new ground on a technical/interactive standpoint for fan-missions. The novice Thief will have a difficult time in some areas, but the overall immersion and player interaction of the level more than makes up for any frustration. And to top it off, there is some very good straightforward thiefing.

Kung Fu Gecko:
  • Pros: Very nice architecture, fun and straightforward gameplay, cleanly executed.
  • Cons: Minor places of possible frustration.
  • Bottom Line: Overall, Circle of Strain 2 is pleasant evening of entertainment for thief fans. It delivers a straightforward assassin and steal mission with nice architectures to view. While it does not break any new ground, it is definitely a "worth playing" mission. Just some good-clean thief fun.

    Hoga:
  • Pros: Solid architecture, realistic object placements.
  • Cons: Too easy to become a hack-and-slash affair, linear and non-exciting gameplay, poor lighting placement.
  • Bottom line: This mission is a decent challenge to the player but lacks the key features which would have made this small-medium sized level much more fun to play.

    By: Chris Patterson

Plot Description: "I was approached by a thief named Bok who wanted to work with me on a job he said was too tough to pull off by himself. I usually work alone, but I wanted to find out what kind of work my competitors were up to, so I agreed to give him a listen. He handed me a map that he said showed the location of some hidden treasure...and that was when I made my mistake. As I looked down at the map, I saw a flash of movement behind me. Too late, I found myself on the wrong end of Bok's blackjack.

Now I've woken up in this god-forsaken place with no weapons and no idea of how to get out of here. But I've promised myself that if I do make it out of here alive, I'll make Bok pay for what he did to me."

     Released: 10/3/1999

     Briefing (10.2 MB)

    By: Wes Morrison (Datoyminaytah)

Plot Description: This mission is a prequel to the missions in "Thief: The Dark Project", and is set just after Garrett has left the Keepers. (Between the training mission and Bafford's.) Garrett has found out about a gem owned by a town merchant and has decided it will make a good target for his first night out after leaving the Keepers.

Additional Comments: This is not a typical Thief mission. There is not a lot to steal, not a lot of guards to evade, just a story to follow, some complex conversations, a puzzle or two, and a few surprises. This mission is in fact a setup for a sequel, which will happen the next morning.

    Comments by Reviewer:
    Level review by CEC UA:

While this level shows complex conversations as they have never been done before (including recieving an item from the AI) there is nothing in this level that makes it what would be called a typical "mission" indeed most of the players time is spent searching for the only building that contains anything new.
