Guards should have Swords Sheathed
Explanation:
Guards should not walk about with the swords constantly out. Upon the first sign of trouble draw them.
Points to bear in mind:
Adds realism, as well as the nice sound of a sword being drawn from its scabbard.
You could tell what direction a guard was walking in by which side his sword was on, making the swords sheathed would make this less pronounced and therefore harder to determine.
In thief 1 that was hard to determine what direction a guard was facing... but in thief 2 you could zoom and use the scouting orb... I think you'll still be able to use them in T3. So, IMO, guards with unsheated swords would be a great.
If that is your only concern, they could add a big shining arrow that shows the guard's direction. Guards should have swords sheathed if unalerted, as well as the policemen have their pistols holstered.
