Intelligent Pursuing
Explanation:
Guards should only give up pursuing if it becomes unlikely that they will find the player. If the player is escaping through a corridor, where there are no junctions, then the guard will know that eventually they will encounter the player.
Points to bear in mind:
However it does not make sense that they would just go back to patrolling. All appropriate missions should have a way for the guards to 'raise the alarm'. This might be a physical alarm system or a sergeant who can go around alerting the grunts.
